Description
The tornado school of great barracuda — where thousands of individual fish arrange themselves in a hollow cylinder rotating around a central empty core — is one of the ocean’s most extraordinary collective behaviours and one of the most visually striking subjects in underwater photography. The formation is maintained by hydrodynamic forces — each fish’s lateral line sensing the water movement of its neighbours and maintaining position by reflex — and can persist for hours in calm conditions. This image was made from inside the tornado school using a 15mm ultra-wide angle lens, the camera positioned at the central void looking outward through the rotating cylinder of fish. The individual barracuda, each approximately 80cm in length, are aligned tangentially to the cylinder axis — their silver sides catching the filtered surface light as a sequence of parallel reflections that creates the characteristic metallic texture of the formation.
