Sepak takraw — widely played across Southeast Asia under various names — produces the most athletically extreme actions in any net sport: the bicycle kick spike requires the player to launch vertically, rotate fully backwards, and strike the rattan ball with the instep while completely inverted. This documentary training portrait was made at the PhilSports Arena training hall in Manila with the Philippine national sepak takraw team’s cooperation, the subject a 19-year-old national team member practising the bicycle kick technique with a toss feed. Shot at 1/4000 second on a 50mm prime at ISO 6400 under the gymnasium fluorescent lighting, the full inversion of the bicycle kick position is captured with every detail sharp: the foot at ball contact, the inverted face, the hands and body axis. The gymnasium roof provides the height reference.
