Description
Beco do Batman (Batman’s Alley) in São Paulo’s bohemian Vila Madalena neighbourhood is one of the world’s most concentrated street art environments — a series of narrow alleyways whose every surface, from ground level to four-storey roofline, has been covered in murals by Brazilian and international artists since the late 1980s. The layering of works — newer murals painted over older ones in an continuous process of cultural accumulation — creates a visual density unlike any curated gallery environment. The alley system extends approximately 200 metres and contains works by Os Gêmeos, Eduardo Kobra, Nunca, and dozens of other established and emerging Brazilian artists. This photograph was made from a position at a junction of two alley sections at midday — the only time when vertical light enters the narrow alleys adequately — using a wide-angle lens that captures the full height of surrounding mural walls simultaneously.
