São Paulo Paraisópolis — Aerial Social Contrast

799.00 د.إ

The Paraisópolis favela adjacent to the Morumbi luxury residential towers in São Paulo, Brazil — aerial view showing the precise boundary between brick favela construction and the infinity pools and tennis courts of the condominium towers.

Description

The aerial photograph of the Paraisópolis favela boundary with the Morumbi luxury residential district has become one of the defining social documentary images of contemporary Brazil — the boundary line between informal settlement and luxury condominium is visible from directly above as an abrupt transition that requires no caption to communicate the income disparity. This image was made from a helicopter at approximately 200 metres altitude directly above the boundary zone, the composition centred on the point where the brick and corrugated-iron density of the favela meets the landscaped gardens and swimming pools of the condominium complex in a single frame width. The image is deliberately without judgement — the factual overhead perspective presents the juxtaposition and allows the viewer’s interpretation. Shot at f/8 on a 24-70mm zoom, both the favela density and the condominium amenities are equally sharp in the high-altitude light.
