Samoan Tattooist — Pe’a Application Session

749.00 د.إ

A Samoan tufuga ta tatau (master tattooist) applying the traditional male pe’a body tattoo — the bone and shell comb tool, the rhythmic tapping motion, the bold geometric pattern emerging on the recipient’s thigh.

Description

The Samoan pe’a is the most extensive traditional tattooing practice in Polynesia — covering the male body from mid-torso to the knee in dense geometric patterns that require multiple sessions over several days, applied with traditional tools (au) made from bone and shell. This documentary image was made during a pe’a session with the tufuga’s permission in Apia, the comb-and-tap application method capturing the precise detail that distinguishes traditional Samoan tattooing from modern tattoo machinery. The tufuga’s hands — one holding the combed tattooing au, the other the striking rod — are in the characteristic tapping position over the partially completed upper thigh section. The recipient’s position on the mat and the crowd of family supporters partially visible in the background communicate the social context of a pe’a as a family event as much as an individual one.
