Description
The Pushkar Camel Fair — held annually in November around the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartik is the world’s largest camel trading fair: over 50,000 camels are traded over a 5-day period on the desert plain beside the sacred Pushkar lake. The fair has expanded to include horse and cattle trading, cultural performances, and carnival entertainments, but the central camel market remains its economic core. This photograph was made from an elevated position on the dune ridge above the main camel ground at sunrise — the hour when the fair ground is active but not yet at full daytime density, and when the horizontal light creates long shadows across the sand that reveal the three-dimensional form of the camel herds and their handlers. The camels’ decorated headgear — embroidered saddle blankets, brass bells, and coloured tassels — provides a secondary pattern of colour across the sand.
