Polar Bear Mother and Cubs — Wapusk Emergence

109.12 د.ك

A polar bear mother emerging from her maternity den at Wapusk National Park with twin cubs — the cubs at 3 months making their first appearance above the snow surface, the mother’s protective posture framing the two small white cubs.

Description

Polar bear maternity den emergence photography at Wapusk National Park requires the coordination of the Churchill Wild ecolodge researchers who have located the den sites and monitor the bears from the season of denning in November through the emergence in late February. The photography is conducted at approved distances using long focal length to avoid influencing the critical emergence period when the cubs first experience the outside world and begin to build the muscle condition that will allow them to travel. This image captures the emergence moment — the mother has cleared the den entrance and stands above the collapsed snow opening while two three-month-old cubs, each approximately 10 kilograms, appear at the den threshold for the first time. The cubs’ small size relative to their mother — who is still carrying significant body mass from her pre-denning feeding — communicates the extraordinary growth challenge ahead.
