The Hurtigruten coastal ferry crossing the Arctic Circle at 66°33’N — the ceremony deck gathering on the bow as the ship crosses the invisible line, the Norwegian coast of Helgeland in winter to port, the ceremony bell ringing.

Description

The Hurtigruten coastal express has sailed the Norwegian coast from Bergen to Kirkenes continuously since 1893 — the 11-day round journey that covers 2,500 miles of Norwegian coastline and crosses the Arctic Circle twice. The traditional Arctic Circle crossing ceremony involves gathering all passengers on the bow deck, the crossing marked by a bell and the symbolic pouring of ice water over first-time crossers by the captain. This image was made during the southbound crossing of the Arctic Circle in February aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen, the ceremony in progress as the ship crosses 66°33’N: the Helgeland coastline is visible in the grey winter light to port, the ceremony participants are gathered at the bow railing for the bell-ringing moment. Shot at 1/500 second handheld on a 24mm prime at ISO 6400 in the February Arctic light that barely qualifies as daylight at this season.
