Description
Tbilisi’s old town — Dzveli Tbilisi — is defined by the balakhani: the deeply cantilevered wooden-balconied townhouses whose elaborate carved wooden screens, colourful painted shutters, and cascading terraces on the Mtkvari River’s steep banks create one of the Caucasus’s most distinctive urban environments. The Narikala fortress — a 4th-century Georgian citadel expanded by the Arabs in the 7th century — overlooks the old town from the southern ridge, its ruined walls descending into the Kura canyon. The Kartlis Deda (Mother of Georgia) statue on the adjacent ridge — a 20-metre aluminium figure holding a bowl of wine for friends and a sword for enemies — adds a surreal scale element to the ridge silhouette. This photograph was made from the Metekhi Church plateau across the river at golden hour — when the western light illuminates the balakhani facades from the west and the fortress ruins from the same direction, unifying the scene in a warm tonality.
