Description
Star trail photography in the Namib requires vehicle access permits for overnight stays within the national park boundary, and Dune 45’s accessible position makes it the most photographed star trail location in southern Africa. This 4-hour composite was assembled from 480 thirty-second exposures made between 10pm and 2am during the new moon window — when the Milky Way centre is overhead and the ambient sky glow is at its annual minimum in this area. The star trails arc around the south celestial pole, invisible from the northern hemisphere, in concentric circles of gold and white that contrast with the deep orange-red of the dune crest silhouette. The base of the dune glows with the residual light reflected from the Milky Way’s core. A single human silhouette at the dune base provides scale.
