Moraine Lake — Valley of Ten Peaks

1,149.00 د.إ

Moraine Lake in Alberta’s Banff National Park — the iconic Valley of Ten Peaks reflected in the glacially fed emerald lake, photographed from the Rockpile at dawn before visitor access opens.

Description

Moraine Lake’s combination of glacial emerald water, the dramatic Valley of Ten Peaks backdrop, and the easily accessible Rockpile viewpoint has made it one of the most photographed lake scenes in North America — once appearing on the Canadian 20-dollar bill. The lake’s colour is produced by glacial rock flour suspended in the meltwater from the Wenkchemna Glacier, which selectively reflects green and blue wavelengths. The Rockpile — a debris field beside the lake — provides a 10-metre elevation advantage over the lakeshore that is essential to the compositional perspective. This photograph was made at 5:30am — before the Road Closure that restricts private vehicles from the access road — after cycling 12km on the Bow Valley Parkway in darkness. The dawn light catching the upper peaks while the valley floor remains in shadow creates the tonal separation that defines the image. The lake surface at this hour is completely undisturbed by wind.
