Description
Medellín’s Metro Cable system — inaugurated in 2004 as the world’s first urban cable car integrated with a metro network — represents the city’s most visible expression of the ‘urban acupuncture’ approach that transformed one of the world’s most dangerous cities into an internationally recognised urban planning case study. The Line K cable from the Acevedo metro station to the Arví ecological park passes over the dense hillside comunas of the northeastern city, the gondolas visible above the informal settlement roofscapes that were previously accessible only by steep pedestrian paths. This image was made from the Mirador de la Independencia viewpoint above the Moravia neighbourhood, looking up the Line K corridor as three gondolas are simultaneously visible at different heights above the comunas — their orange-and-blue livery contrasting with the brick and corrugated iron of the settlement below. The Andean ridgeline above the city provides the green background.
