Description
The Revillagigedo Archipelago, known as the Mexican Galápagos, supports one of the Pacific Ocean’s densest concentrations of giant oceanic manta rays. These animals — with wingspans reaching 7 metres — regularly approach scuba divers for extended interactions. This photograph was made from directly below two mantas in barrel-roll cleaning station behaviour at a depth of 8 metres, shooting upward against the surface light. The counter-shading of the manta — dark dorsal surface, white ventral — is reversed by the upward shooting angle, creating a composition of pure graphic power: two great white forms banking against the silver-blue Pacific surface light. An underwater photograph that functions as fine art of the first order.
