Description
The mandrill is the world’s largest monkey and the most vibrantly coloured mammal in existence — adult males developing extraordinary facial colouration ranging from cobalt blue and purple on the nasal ridges through scarlet on the nasal bridge to gold and white in the beard, with the intensity of colouration directly correlated to social dominance. This close portrait, made at a primate sanctuary in Cameroon with full CITES educational photography documentation, was captured with a 500mm macro at 2m range during a period of social excitement that intensified the facial colouration to its maximum. The image resolves individual hairs of the white beard, the texture of the facial skin, and the precise colour distribution with complete fidelity.
