Malecón Havana — Classic Cars at Evening

35,273.45 ¥

Havana’s Malecón seafront boulevard photographed at evening from street level — the 1950s American classic cars passing in both directions, the faded Vedado apartment facades behind, the Caribbean sea crashing the seawall.

Description

The Malecón — Avenida de Maceo — extends 8 kilometres along Havana’s northern seafront and is the city’s most celebrated public space. The 1950s American cars that circulate throughout Havana — preserved through Cuban mechanical ingenuity that keeps 60-year-old vehicles functioning with Soviet and improvised parts — are concentrated on the Malecón’s traffic lanes where they are most visible. This photograph was made from a sidewalk position on the Malecón at 6pm — the golden hour when the western sun catches the sea spray from the crashing waves and the car paintwork simultaneously. A 1/250 second exposure freezes the approaching cars while the wave spray behind creates a soft-focus white explosion against the sea wall. The faded colonial apartment facades on the landward side provide the depth of urban context. A 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air in two-tone green and cream is the primary vehicle in the composition.
