Description
Night diving in the Maldives combines the disorientation of underwater darkness with the increased activity of nocturnal reef predators — whitetip reef sharks are among the most commonly encountered, as they transition from the daytime resting behaviour of reef edge ledges to active nocturnal hunting across the sandy reef flats. This image was made at the dive site Maaya Thila in North Ari Atoll at 11pm — one of the Maldives’ most famous shark encounters — the whitetip reef shark approaching within 1.5 metres of the camera during a 45-minute dive. Shot with a wide-angle 10mm prime in an amphibious housing with two canister video lights providing the sole illumination: the shark’s streamlined body and distinctive white-tipped fins are in sharp detail in the light pool while the reef falls immediately to darkness beyond the torch range. The eye of the shark reflects the torch light as a single bright point.
