Description
The Maldivian lagoon colour gradient from open ocean to reef shallows represents one of the most photographically compelling natural colour transitions accessible from the air — the progression from navy at 40-metre depth through cobalt and turquoise to the translucent aquamarine of 1-metre reef flats where individual coral heads are visible from the air. This image was made from a seaplane transfer between atolls during the low-altitude transit phase — approximately 300 metres above the lagoon surface — using a 24-70mm zoom through the cleaned window port. The composition is centred on the reef boundary where the colour transition is most abrupt: the 40-metre lagoon floor dropping to the 1-metre reef flat over a distance of 10 metres, the colour changing from deep cobalt to pale aquamarine in a single frame width. A dhoni fishing boat crossing the reef shallows provides scale and human context.
