Eurasian lynx den site photography is conducted under strict research permit conditions with the cooperation of the researchers who have located and are monitoring the specific family group — the den location is never published, and the photography session is limited to the minimum time required to document the animals without habituating them to human presence. This image was made with a research team monitoring a female with three kittens in a Norwegian boreal forest, the den located in the shelter of a fallen pine tree root plate. The three kittens are in the open for the 15-minute observation window — their spotted coats blending with the dappled light of the forest floor, their oversized paws communicating the disproportionate paw-to-body ratio that is the species’ most distinctive anatomical feature. The mother lynx’s presence is confirmed by the researchers’ telemetry but she remains in the surrounding forest throughout.
