Description
Leatherback sea turtle nesting photography requires coordination with conservation monitoring teams and strict lighting protocols — no white light is permitted on nesting beaches as it disorients both nesting females and emerging hatchlings. This image was made using red-spectrum lighting approved by the conservation team during a nesting season monitoring event in Trinidad, capturing the post-nesting female returning to the surf in the first light of dawn. The leatherback — at 2.1 metres long and estimated 500kg — is the world’s largest living turtle, and the full-body scale of this animal is only comprehensible in relation to the beach environment. The drag marks of the turtle’s approach and the disturbed sand above the egg chamber are visible behind. The dawn light illuminates the distinctive blue-black leathery carapace with its white spotting and reveals the turtle’s full texture in warm natural light for the first time as the red conservation lighting is extinguished.
