Description
The wing membrane of the green lacewing (Chrysopa perla) is sufficiently thin — approximately 300-500nm — to function as a thin-film optical element, creating interference colours under polarised light illumination. This photograph, made at 5:1 reproduction with a cross-polariser configuration that enhances the thin-film colour effects, captures the full lacewing wing in a composition of unexpected chromatic richness — the normally transparent wing transformed into a mosaic of gold, green, blue, and violet by the interference effect. The dense venation network, clearly resolved at this magnification, divides the wing membrane into hundreds of small panels, each with slightly different membrane thickness and consequently different interference colour.
