Description
The Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine’s torii gate network — over 5,000 gates donated by businesses and individuals as offerings to the fox deity Inari — creates a 4-kilometre trail through the mountain behind the main shrine in tunnels of overlapping orange-vermilion gates. The photography challenge is the visitor density: in daylight hours the trail is so crowded that unobstructed long exposures are rarely possible. The solution is the 5am opening window, when the first pilgrim visitors are present but sparse — their motion in a long exposure becoming ghostly blur trails rather than sharp human subjects. This image was made at 5:45am on a weekday in autumn, a single pilgrim ascending the trail visible as a blurred form in the gate tunnel. The 30-second exposure at f/11 and ISO 200 records the gate inscriptions as readable text while the pilgrim’s movement is recorded as a translucent human form. The pre-dawn atmospheric moisture intensifies the red of the gates.
