Description
The Arashiyama bamboo grove is simultaneously one of Kyoto’s most visited and most overexposed tourist attractions — in daylight hours, the narrow path is packed with visitors whose density makes the contemplative photography of the grove’s spatial quality practically impossible. The solution documented here is the pre-dawn arrival: gate opening is 5am, and by 5:30am in October, sufficient light exists for a usable exposure while the grove remains visitor- free for approximately 90 minutes before the first tourist groups arrive. This image was made at 5:35am with a 24mm prime at f/2.8 and ISO 3200, the long perspective of the main path through the grove communicating the column density of the Moso bamboo — stems of 10-15cm diameter reaching 12 metres — while the empty path in the available dawn light provides the solitude that makes the grove’s visual quality most accessible.
