Japan Shinkansen — Mount Fuji Window Frame

71.32 د.ك

Mount Fuji photographed through the window of a Tokaido Shinkansen passing at 285km/h — the window frame enclosing the perfect cone of the 3,776-metre volcano, the October snow line visible on the upper slopes, the train seat edge in foreground.

Description

The window-framed Shinkansen Fuji shot is a well-established genre in Japanese travel photography — the Tokaido Shinkansen line runs within 30km of Fuji between Shin-Fuji and Mishima stations, providing a 10-15 second photography window from the right side (westbound) or left side (eastbound) at the peak proximity moment. The challenge is securing a window seat in the correct position and being ready with the camera pre-focused on infinity before the mountain becomes visible through the window. This image was made on the westbound Nozomi from Tokyo to Osaka in the reserved window seat 3A, Mount Fuji appearing in the window at 10:42am. The 1/2000 second exposure at ISO 800 freezes the mountain despite the 285km/h train speed. The seat headrest cover and the window frame edge provide the interior context that makes the composition a train image rather than just a landscape.
