Description
Landmannalaugar in Iceland’s uninhabited interior is accessible only by 4WD vehicle through river crossings and F-road mountain tracks, and this access difficulty preserves one of the world’s most colourful mountain landscapes from mass tourism. The rhyolite mineral composition of the mountains produces the extraordinary colour range chlorite creates the green, iron oxides the red and yellow, manganese compounds the purple — that makes Landmannalaugar one of the most photographically sought-after locations in Iceland. This image was made from the trail above the Laugahraun lava field looking back toward the main rhyolite amphitheatre, the black obsidian lava field providing the foreground texture against which the coloured mountains are displayed. The natural geothermal hot springs at the field’s edge are visible as steam. Shot at f/11 on a 24-70mm zoom during the late August window when the highland roads are accessible.
