Description

The honeycomb cell of Apis mellifera (European honeybee) is precisely manufactured to hexagonal geometry — each cell wall maintained at 120-degree angles with tolerance of less than 0.05 degrees across thousands of cells built by different individual workers. This accuracy is achieved through a combination of genetic programming, temperature regulation, and collective building behaviour rather than centralized design. This photograph, made at 2:1 reproduction with the comb removed from the hive and positioned on a lightbox, reveals the variation in cell contents visible in a single frame — capped honey cells sealed with white beeswax, open cells containing crystalline pollen stores in yellow and orange, and empty cells of slightly larger drone-cell diameter at the comb margin.
