Description
The Highland Games tradition of Scotland dates to at least the 11th century — competitions in heavy athletics events using traditional implements including the caber (a full-length pine pole), the stone of strength, the hammer, and the sheaf toss. The Pitlochry Highland Games in Perthshire is one of Scotland’s largest and most photographically accessible events, combining athletic competition with traditional music, dance, and Highland dress. The caber toss — uniquely in athletics — is judged not on distance but on technique: the competitor must run with the caber vertical and toss it so it falls away from them and lands perfectly at the 12 o’clock position.
