Ha Long Bay — Vịnh Hạ Long — in Quảng Ninh Province covers 1,553 square kilometres and contains over 1,600 individual limestone karst islands, the product of 500 million years of geological history including tropical reef formation, burial, tectonic uplift, and dissolution. The bay’s character changes completely between seasons — in summer the water is green and the light harsh, while in autumn a combination of mist, lower sun angles, and calmer water produces the characteristic layered silhouette quality that makes the landscape so distinctive. This photograph was made from the bow of a traditional wooden junk at 6:30am, requiring overnight accommodation on the boat to access the bay’s inner regions before daytrip vessels arrive. The progressive receding silhouette planes of the karst towers create a landscape of extraordinary atmospheric depth.
