Description
The Egyptian Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) of Istanbul’s Eminönü district has operated continuously since 1664 as the primary spice trading point for the city — the L-shaped market hall whose Ottoman stone vaulting and coloured tile ornament frame the spectacularly colourful spice displays. The pre-opening period provides the best photography window: traders arrange their spice mounds with deliberate aesthetic care before the crowds arrive at 9am. This image was made at 8:15am with the market newly opened, the trader at the frame’s right edge in the process of smoothing the surface of a turmeric mound. The spice display spans the full frame in a colour sequence from white fenugreek and black pepper through yellow turmeric to deep red paprika and saffron. Shot at f/4 on a 35mm prime using the available early morning light entering through the bazaar’s arched windows, the tiled arch of the Ottoman interior frames the composition.
