Description
The Thornicroft’s giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis thornicrofti) is an endangered subspecies endemic to the South Luangwa Valley of Zambia — a population of fewer than 500 individuals distinguishable by their irregular white spotting. This photograph was made from the elevated position of a tree-house photographic platform in the Mfuwe area, shooting from canopy height toward an adult male browsing in an adjacent Sausage tree. The proximity of the shooting position to the canopy level creates a rare photographic perspective — the giraffe’s head and neck are below the camera, the tree crown and giraffe head at the same height, and the African sky behind. An unusual and compositionally distinctive giraffe portrait.
