Gecko toe pad adhesion operates through van der Waals forces — the weak quantum mechanical attraction between surfaces at close proximity — generated by millions of hierarchically branched setal hairs, each terminating in approximately 1,000 spatula-shaped tips of 200nm diameter. At 4:1 optical macro magnification, the setal array is at the limit of optical resolution — the individual setae are not resolved as individual hairs, but the fibrous texture of the setal field is clearly visible as a grey matte surface compared to the smooth cuticle of the toe’s non-adhesive regions. This image captures the full lamella structure of the gecko toe pad — the transverse ridges (lamellae) that increase the total setal-surface contact area — at a scale that allows both the lamella geometry and the setal texture on each lamella to be simultaneously visible. The image is made of a freshly shed gecko skin to preserve the setal structure without post-mortem degradation.
