Finnish Lapland — Reindeer Sleigh Arctic Forest

183.40 £

A reindeer-drawn sleigh journey through the Arctic forest of Finnish Lapland in January — the Sámi guide standing on the sleigh runners through snow-covered spruce forest at dusk, the forest trees bowed under 50cm of snow.

Description

The Arctic winter forest of Finnish Lapland — the boreal taiga zone north of the Arctic Circle — is transformed by January snowfall into a landscape of extreme whiteness and silence: every spruce branch loaded with 40- 60cm of snow that bends the trees into distinctive bowed forms, the snow so deep that the forest floor is 1.5 metres above the summer surface level. The reindeer sleigh journey through this landscape is one of Finnish Lapland’s most distinctive tourism experiences, and this image captures it at the optimal dusk moment — when the last blue light of the Arctic afternoon illuminates the snow-covered trees while the guide’s headlamp provides a warm focal point. Shot at 1/60 second handheld from the passenger sled, the slight motion blur of the sleigh communicates movement while the guide and the tree forms are sufficiently sharp to communicate the environment.
