Description
The fennec fox (Vulpes zerda) is defined by its proportionally enormous ears — radiators of excess body heat in the extreme Saharan thermal environment — and by its capacity to survive indefinitely without drinking water, obtaining all required moisture from the prey items and vegetation of its desert habitat. This photograph was made at dawn near Merzouga, Morocco, an individual fox photographed on dune crest at the moment of first light, the enormous ear silhouettes backlit against the sunrise sky and the fine desert sand texture of the dune surface resolved at full macro scale around the animal. The fox is known to local guides as a reliable dawn presence at this dune site, enabling precise pre-positioning for the sunrise light.
