Erosion Study — Sandstone Time Cathedral

A close-up section of Navajo sandstone canyon wall photographed to reveal the sweeping horizontal banding of 180-million-year-old aeolian deposit layers.

Description

The stratified sandstone walls of Antelope Canyon, Arizona, record approximately 180 million years of sequential aeolian (wind-blown) sediment deposition in their distinct horizontal bands — each layer a distinct geological event separated by thousands of years. This photograph, made in the narrow canyon slot during the brief daily window of directed overhead sunlight that illuminates the canyon floor, captures a section of wall that shows the full spectral range of the canyon’s iron-oxide colouration — from near-white bleached zones through warm cream and terracotta to deep rust and crimson. The directional light creates subtle gradients of shadow and highlight that reveal the surface texture’s threedimensional quality. A landmark image of geological documentary photography
