Description
Bull elephant charge photography in Amboseli requires a degree of calculated risk management that places this image among the most physically demanding in the catalog — the photographer must establish a ground position that allows the charge to develop toward the camera while maintaining a vehicle escape route and reading the elephant’s body language for the distinction between a true charge and a mock charge. This image was made from a Land Cruiser position during a mock charge by a known 45-year-old bull during musth, the chemical state of heightened aggression that produces such behaviour in sexually mature males. At the moment captured, the bull is 30 metres from the camera position — close enough for the full facial expression, ear spread, and body posture to be resolved at 400mm — with all four feet off the ground at the gallop’s suspension phase.
