Description
Finding a viable reflection pool for the Tre Cime requires knowledge of the high alpine lakes above the Rifugio Auronzo — the main tourist lake is well-documented, but the smaller tarns above it offer less-visited reflection positions with different foreground treatments. This image was made at a small névé-fed tarn above the Rifugio Locatelli during a September evening when the first frost of the season had touched the surrounding grass, each blade coated in ice crystal in the foreground. The 4-second exposure at f/11 smoothed the tarn surface to a mirror, the alpenglow-lit Tre Cime towers reflected without distortion. The frost-whitened grass provides a textural foreground element that communicates the altitude and season without requiring a caption.
