Description
The Tre Cime di Lavaredo are the most recognisable formation in the Dolomites and among the most photographed mountains in Europe, yet the combination of specific light and conditions creates images that transcend the familiar. This photograph was made from a position above the Rifugio Locatelli — the classic foreground lake reflection position — during the 8-minute alpenglow window that follows sunset in September when a first snowfall had dusted the via ferrata ledges and the sky retained residual blue saturation without direct sun. The amber-to-rose colour transition on the south-facing limestone faces is the result of the horizontal scattering of the atmosphere below the visual horizon, and the cool north faces contrast at maximum with the lit south faces in this light. Shot on a 24-70mm at f/11 with a 2-second exposure to smooth the lake reflection surface.
