Description
Technical rebreather diving — using a closed-circuit breathing system that recirculates exhaled gas through a CO2 scrubber and adds gas as consumed — eliminates the bubble stream of conventional open-circuit scuba, allowing divers to approach marine life without the disturbance of exhaled bubbles. At 50 metres depth, the water column above filters out red and orange wavelengths, leaving only blue-green available light — a quality that renders skin tones as pale blue and all warm colours as near-monochromatic. This photograph was made at a Red Sea wall dive site with a dive partner photographer using a wide-angle underwater housing and dual video lights at 200 Joule output to restore warm colour at the close working distance. The rebreather unit — a large rectangular back-mounted device — is clearly visible, as is the diver’s face through the full-face mask, creating a portrait that is simultaneously technical documentation and underwater fine art.
