Description
The habituated chimpanzee communities of Kibale National Park in Uganda allow photographers to approach to within 8m of wild animals with habituated tolerance of human presence. This portrait, made of the adult male known as Kalema in the Kanyanchu community, was captured with a 300mm lens in diffuse forest light during a morning grooming session — the chimpanzee’s gaze directed with focused curiosity at the photographer, the social intelligence of the individual communicating directly through the lens. At 98.7% genetic similarity to humans, chimpanzee portraiture creates an uncomfortable and philosophically rich proximity between photographer, subject, and viewer that distinguishes the genre from all other wildlife photography.
