Chicago’s South Side blues and jazz club tradition extends from the Great Migration of Black Americans from the Mississippi Delta in the early 20th century — the clubs of the Bronzeville neighbourhood providing the creative environment that developed Chicago blues and the hard bop jazz style that followed. This photograph was made at Green Mill Cocktail Lounge — one of Chicago’s surviving historic jazz venues — during a late-night performance set. A single overhead spotlight from the stage rig provides the only illumination, creating a dramatic top-light that illuminates the bass instrument’s carved upper bout and strings while leaving the bassist’s face in partial shadow. The warmth of the club interior — polished wood, brass fittings, the amber of the bar backlight — blurs into the background at f/1.8 while the bass instrument itself, at the focal point, carries the image’s structural weight.
