Cheetah Cubs Play — Maasai Mara

167.06

Three cheetah cubs at play in the Maasai Mara — sibling interaction, tumbling coordination practice, and the pure kinetic joy of predator development captured in a single frame.

Description

Cheetah cubs between the ages of 3 and 9 months engage in extensive play behaviour that develops the coordination, agility, and hunting instinct required for their survival as independent hunters. This photograph captures three cubs from the Maasai Mara Naledi family in a characteristic play interaction — two cubs in a mock wrestling grip while the third leaps toward them from the right, the composition capturing all three in their individual peak-movement positions simultaneously. Made from a vehicle at 15m range with a 400mm lens during a 3-hour play session that provided multiple composition opportunities. The open savanna background and afternoon light create ideal conditions for the high-speed capture required for crisp action photography.
