Description
The panther chameleon of Madagascar (Furcifer pardalis) is capable of shifting its skin colouration through the full visible spectrum within 20 seconds, using chromatophore cells that physically expand and contract to alter the wavelength of reflected light. This photograph captures the animal mid-transition — the left half of the body still showing the original turquoise-green resting coloration while the right half is transitioning to the territorial orange-red display state, creating a visual record of the colour-change mechanism in process. Photographed in a controlled natural-light terrarium with full CITES documentation for the captive subject.
