Description
The Hassan II Mosque is the second largest mosque in the world — built on a platform over the Atlantic Ocean on King Hassan II’s instruction that his mosque should stand where the sea meets the sky, a quotation from the Quran. The combination of scale, coastal position, and Moroccan Islamic architecture creates a photography subject of extreme visual power: the 210-metre minaret (the world’s tallest) rising from the ocean platform, the sea breaking against the mosque’s foundation walls, the carved and gilded minaret tile work visible at close range. This image was made from the coastal corniche at sunset, the Atlantic light illuminating the minaret’s western face in warm gold while the ocean below the mosque platform shows the Atlantic swell in motion. Shot on a 70-200mm telephoto at f/8 from the corniche promenade, the mosque’s coastal position — the Atlantic surrounding the foundation on three sides — is clearly communicated.
