Description
Cappadocia’s fairy chimneys — columns of compressed volcanic ash (tufa) capped with harder basalt boulders that protected the softer material below from erosion — are at their most visually dramatic in the raking light of dusk, when long shadows articulate their three-dimensional forms across the valley floor. This image was made from the overlook above Göreme at the moment when the shadow-to-lit ratio on the chimneys was at its maximum — approximately 40 minutes before sunset when the sun angle produces the longest possible shadows. Shot on a 70-200mm telephoto at f/8 compressing the layers of chimneys into apparent proximity, the overlapping forms create a rhythmic pattern of warm tufa and cool shadow across the frame. A single hot air balloon, residual from the dawn balloon flights, drifts in the violet upper sky.
