Cappadocia’s Göreme Valley is one of the world’s premier hot air ballooning destinations — on a clear morning during peak season, over 150 balloons may be airborne simultaneously above the volcanic tuff landscape of fairy chimneys, carved valleys, and ancient cave churches. This photograph was made from a balloon at 400 metres above the valley floor at the peak of the inflation period — the moment when the greatest number of balloons are simultaneously airborne — providing an aerial vantage point impossible to achieve from any ground position. The other balloons are at various altitudes and distances, their vivid colours and patterns creating a visual texture against the warm sandstone landscape below. The pre-dawn inflation light still catching the nearest balloon fabrics with warm artificial floodlight creates a contrast with the natural morning light illuminating the landscape.
