Description
The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town — a heritage harbour development in the oldest working dock in the Southern Hemisphere — combines the restored Victorian warehouse and dock infrastructure of the 1860s original construction with contemporary retail, restaurant, and hotel development. The Waterfront’s North Wharf basin provides the classic view: the Alfred Basin’s still water reflecting the Clock Tower and the restored red-brick warehouses, with Table Mountain’s 1,086-metre flat-topped massif rising directly above the harbour as the most dramatic urban mountain backdrop in the world. This photograph was made at golden hour from a position on the swing bridge over the Alfred Basin entrance — the elevated position above the water that provides unobstructed views in all directions simultaneously. Table Mountain at sunset turns from grey to warm ochre as the horizontal rays catch its quartzite face, creating the maximum tonal contrast with the blue harbour water below.
