Description
The African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is one of the continent’s most numerous large bovids, forming herds of several thousand animals in optimal habitat. This photograph captures approximately 200 animals of a larger herd crossing a Chobe dust plain in the late afternoon — the red Kalahari sand raised into a dense ochre cloud by the movement of hundreds of hooves, the afternoon sun backlighting the dust cloud into a warm atmospheric haze that silhouettes the individual animals within it. The image communicates the mass-movement quality of large herbivore herd behaviour — the collective organism of a buffalo herd that no image of individual animals can convey — and has been widely used in African wildlife and conservation communication contexts.
