Description
From above, the slot canyon system near Page, Arizona, reveals itself as a series of dark fracture lines in the sandstone plateau — the dramatic interior spaces of Antelope Canyon and its neighbours are entirely invisible, their presence announced only by the dark line of shadow where the canyon opening splits the plateau surface. This aerial photograph, made from a drone at 200m above the plateau surface, captures the plan geometry of the entire canyon system — multiple branching slot canyon fractures revealing the geological structure that produced them. The image is the opposite of conventional slot canyon photography that celebrates the interior; this shows the exterior geometry of the same geological phenomenon from a perspective that few photographers have documented.
