Description
The Morpho butterfly’s wing iridescence is produced by a nanostructure on the scale surface — a series of ridges with lamellar branches that form a multilayer interference system tuned to reflect blue wavelengths. At 7:1 magnification, the individual wing scales are large enough to resolve clearly — each scale approximately 0.2mm × 0.1mm, overlapping in a shingle pattern across the wing surface. This image captures both the iridescent blue scales and the adjacent melanin-pigmented brown scales in the same field of view, the boundary between the two scale types communicating the wing’s pattern origin — the structural colour (iridescent blue) and pigment colour (brown) occupying adjacent regions of the wing surface in a pattern that is only legible at this scale. The scale surface nanostructure, while below optical resolution, modifies the light scattering and produces the characteristic angle-dependent colour shift visible at the scale edges where the viewing angle relative to the ridge orientation varies.
