Description
Danum Valley Conservation Area protects one of the oldest undisturbed lowland dipterocarp forests remaining in Borneo — trees that have been growing without significant human disturbance for over 130 million years of continuous rainforest presence in the Sundaland. The forest floor photograph presents the challenge of extreme dynamic range: the dense canopy above admits approximately 1% of ambient light, while the canopy surface itself is fully sunlit. This image was made with a 14mm ultra-wide at f/5.6 and ISO 3200, looking upward from the root buttress of a Shorea superba emergent tree whose trunk diameter exceeds 2.5 metres. The fan of root buttresses frames the lower composition while the trunk rises out of frame above. The green-filtered light on the forest floor creates the characteristic dim cathedral quality that defines primary rainforest photography.
