Description
The North Yungas Road between La Paz and Coroico in Bolivia carries the informal designation of ‘Death Road’ — a reference to its history as the most dangerous road in the world before the construction of a paved parallel route diverted vehicle traffic. The old road is now used almost exclusively by mountain bikers on guided descent tours — the 65km downhill from 4,650 metres to 1,200 metres over unpaved, narrow, cliff-edge road representing one of the world’s most extreme cycling descents. This image was made from a position on the road below a particularly exposed section where the cloud forest canyon drops 600 metres immediately to the right of the road’s unguarded edge, the descending cyclist frozen at 1/1000 second on a 70-200mm telephoto at f/5.6, the valley depth clearly visible through the road edge.
